The chiropractic part of our allied health facility was established in 1961 here in the Parramatta district.  Anthony O’Reilly is Parramatta’s most experienced chiropractor having worked locally continuously for 39 years.

Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that your nervous system controls the function of virtually every cell, tissue, organ and system of your body. Therefore, any interference to the nervous system can cause a variety of health problems ranging from neck, back and limb pain to headaches and digestive problems. The spine and its joints house the nervous system and many everyday activities can cause spinal bones to lose their normal position or motion, creating nerve interferences (which are called subluxations). The role of the chiropractor is to detect and correct these subluxations in order to restore function to the nervous system. Your consultation will include a comprehensive history and examination including postural analysis, muscle testing, muscle and joint motion, neurological analysis and palpation of the spine and related areas. Based on the examination findings, the chiropractor will propose a tailored treatment plan.

Chiropractic Techniques  Anthony O'Reilly chiropractor

Diversified

This is the most common adjustive and effective technique used by

chiropractors around the world. However, sometimes patients who enquire looking for a different chiropractic technique may not seek diversifiedadjustments.

Terminal Point Technique (TPT or Drop-Piece)

chiropractor terminal point technique

TPT uses drop piece sections on adjusting couches or tables to facilitate adjustments.  Other techniques that use TPT include Thompson, Peirce-Stillwagon and Toggle recoil.

Activator Methods

chiropractor Activator technique This chiropractic technique is a gentle low force technique that utilises specific procedures to detect spinal joint dysfunction, analyse leg length inequality, detect body mechanic problems and check overall spinal balance.  The Activator is a unique hand held instrument which delivers a controlled, light and fast thrust without causing undue strain.

Dry Needling

chiropractic Dry needlingA specific therapy for soft tissue dysfunctions, such as muscle, tendon, ligament, joint capsule, fascia or nerve involvement conditions.  Dry needling uses filament needles to create small lesions in specific areas of soft tissues to normalise soft tissue disturbances without the involvement of any pharmacological substances or processes.Majority of clinical pain is myofascial in origin.

Research states that 85% of back pain and 54.6% of chronic headaches and neck pain are myofascial pain in origin.  Myofascial pain can be characterised by trigger points, muscle spasm, muscle tension and muscle deficiency.  Significant tissue inflammation, tissue contractures, tissue adhesions and poor circulation occurs resulting in pain syndromes. Dry needling breaks up these soft tissue disturbances and promotes healing of tissue with pain relief as a positive result.  Whether it is muscle damage by overuse from daily life, trauma or sporting activity, dry needling can be used for any soft tissue dysfunctions.

Rehabilitation Technique

A newer therapeutic strategy is a separate science of chiropractic rehabilitation.  A revolution has occurred in the past 15 years in the field of chronic pain and many chiropractors have been at the forefront in creating new management approaches and collecting research evidence to support the new theories.  A radical rethink has occurred about the way we manage the neurological, mechanical and behavioural aspects of chronic pain.  Science has driven new developments in exercise science, soft tissue injury and manual therapies, and the behaviour of pain and suffering.

chiropractor rehabilitation  Under rehabilitative care, as the patient, you take an active role in solving your chronic problem.  This involves us helping you to understand how muscles , joints and tissues work together to provide flexibility and stability.  You will be assessed for postural imbalances and core stability.  Rehabilitative exercises are one component of the overall strategy aimed at improving strength, flexibility, co-ordination, balance and aerobic fitness.  This approach prevents future problems and actually improves longevity and quality of life.

In most cases, exercise forms an integral part of recovery.  The combination of specific stretches, stabilisation and strengthening exercises, in conjunction with chiropractic care and appropriate soft tissue techniques produces excellent results.

Osteopathy

This differs from chiropractic in that it is more concerned with circulation, cardio-vascular circulation, respiratory movement (circulation) and cerebrospinal fluid circulation.  Therefore, osteopaths are more likely to employ massage and soft tissue techniques, cranial adjustments, lymphatic drainage etc.  However, there will be a large overlap between osteopathy and holistic chiropractic.

Workers Compensation

Occupational and workers compensation injuries are well managed at Health plus Chiropractic.  We are ideally placed in caring for patients with work-related injuries for a number of substantial reasons which include Anthony’s early experience in chiropractic practices that specialised in these injuries, our broad skills in rehabilitation and soft-tissue injuries, an experienced administrative system that is proactive in dealing with insurers, WorkCover and employers, all of our chiropractors have been trained and accredited in soft-tissue injury management by WorkCover NSW; a high quality standard of professional communication with medical practitioners and others involved with injury management, provision of pre-employment health/medical screening and assessment for major companies, and finally our approach is the most-up to date and evidence based available.  Our interest in this area means we don’t fall for the myth that workers must only receive the treatment recommended by the company doctor or that a referral is essential prior to receiving treatment.  If you have a work-related injury, do arrange to see us to find out how much we can help you recover.
